Tuen Mun & Tin Shui Wai, up close

Tuen Mun and Tin Shui Wai sit in the western New Territories, large planned new towns built from the 1970s onward — genuinely useful, if less immediately picturesque, places to see how most Hong Kong residents actually live outside the tourist core.

The Light Rail

This corner of the New Territories has its own street-level light rail network, distinct from the MTR heavy rail system used elsewhere — a smaller-scale, tram-like way of getting around the area's new towns.

Ching Chung Koon

A large Taoist temple complex in Tuen Mun, known for its landscaped gardens and bonsai collection alongside its religious buildings — a quieter, more contemplative temple visit than the busier Wong Tai Sin or Man Mo.

Hong Kong Wetland Park

Covered in more detail in our birdwatching guide, this sits in Tin Shui Wai and is one of the more worthwhile specific reasons to visit this part of the territory.

Why visit

Not a conventional sightseeing district, but a genuine look at planned new-town living, reachable by MTR West Rail Line or Light Rail, and worth combining with the wetland park rather than visiting purely for its own sake.
