Kennedy Town & Sai Ying Pun, up close

Kennedy Town and Sai Ying Pun sit at Hong Kong Island's western edge, marking where the MTR Island Line currently terminates and where the city's older trading-street character (covered in more depth in our Sheung Wan guide) gives way to a quieter, more residential feel.

The waterfront promenade

Kennedy Town's harbourfront has been redeveloped into a genuinely pleasant public promenade, popular for running and simply sitting by the water — less crowded than the Tsim Sha Tsui or Central waterfronts.

A café and bar scene

Both districts have developed a notable independent café and bar scene over the past decade, drawing a mix of students (from the nearby University of Hong Kong) and younger residents rather than tourists.

Belcher Bay Park and the old power station chimneys

A small waterfront park near Kennedy Town preserves several chimneys from a demolished 1920s power station, an unusual industrial-heritage landmark folded into a public green space.

Getting there

The MTR Island Line's western terminus makes both districts easy to reach directly, a change from their more isolated character before the line extended this far west.
