Street food
Street food stalls and small "dai pai dong"-style shops remain some of the best-value eating in the city, even as their numbers have thinned over the decades.
Classics to try
- Curry fish balls — skewered and simmered in a mild curry sauce, sold everywhere from Mong Kok to Causeway Bay.
- Egg waffles (gai daan jai) — a bubble-textured sweet waffle, best eaten hot off the griddle.
- Stinky tofu — fermented tofu, deep-fried, with a smell far stronger than its flavour.
- Cart noodles — build-your-own noodle soup from a counter of toppings.
Where to look
Temple Street, Mong Kok's back streets, and Sham Shui Po all still have a strong street-food presence; Central's Graham Street market area is a good starting point on the Island side.
