South Asian food & Chungking Mansions

Hong Kong has a South Asian community dating back generations, and its food — particularly around Tsim Sha Tsui and Chungking Mansions — forms a genuine, long-established layer of the city's food culture rather than a recent trend.

Chungking Mansions

A dense, multi-tower building in Tsim Sha Tsui better known to some for budget guesthouses (see our hostels guide), Chungking Mansions is also home to a genuine concentration of South Asian, particularly Indian, Pakistani and Nepali, restaurants and grocery shops — some of the most authentic and affordable South Asian food in the city, if a little rough around the edges in presentation.

Beyond Chungking Mansions

Standalone Indian, Pakistani, Nepali and Sri Lankan restaurants are found across the city at every price point, from simple curry houses to more polished modern restaurants, reflecting communities well beyond the one building most visitors associate with the cuisine.

What to try

Beyond familiar curry-house staples, look for Nepali momos (dumplings), South Indian dosa, and the specific regional character that varies restaurant to restaurant rather than assuming "curry" is one uniform category.
