Toast, sandwiches & French toast, HK-style
Toast and sandwiches occupy their own distinct corner of Hong Kong's cha chaan teng menu (see our cha chaan teng guide), reworked from Western originals into something genuinely local.
Hong Kong-style French toast
Thick-cut bread, often with a peanut butter or kaya (coconut jam) filling sandwiched inside, battered and deep-fried rather than pan-fried, then topped with butter and condensed milk or syrup — considerably richer and more indulgent than a typical Western French toast.
Thick toast with condensed milk
Simple grilled or toasted thick-cut white bread, generously spread with condensed milk and butter — a genuine comfort-food staple rather than a novelty, found on nearly every cha chaan teng menu.
Sandwiches
Club sandwiches and simpler egg or luncheon-meat sandwiches round out the format, usually served with the crusts cut off and cut into neat triangles — a small presentation detail that's remained fairly consistent across generations of cha chaan teng.
Where it fits in the day
Most commonly ordered as part of a breakfast or afternoon tea set (see our breakfast culture guide) rather than as a standalone meal.
