Hong Kong's festival calendar mixes traditional Chinese lunar-calendar events with a few dates found nowhere else.

Lunar New Year

The biggest date on the calendar, usually falling in late January or February — expect fireworks over the harbour, flower markets in the days before, and many small businesses closed for several days.

Cheung Chau Bun Festival

A uniquely Hong Kong event on the outlying island of Cheung Chau, built around towering bun-covered scaffolds and a bun-scrambling competition, alongside a colourful parade.

Mid-Autumn Festival

Marked with mooncakes and lantern displays across the city's parks, usually in September or October depending on the lunar calendar.

Dragon Boat Festival

Races held in several harbours around the territory, commemorating the same lunar-calendar date celebrated across the Chinese-speaking world.
