LGBTQ+ travellers: what to know
Hong Kong is generally considered one of the more accepting destinations in Asia for LGBTQ+ travellers, though the legal picture is mixed and still evolving — worth understanding in general terms rather than assuming it matches home.
The legal picture
Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in Hong Kong since 1991. Hong Kong does not currently have same-sex marriage, though a series of court rulings in recent years have expanded recognition of same-sex couples' rights in specific areas such as spousal visas and inheritance. Anti-discrimination protection specifically covering sexual orientation is more limited than in many Western countries. Because this area continues to shift through court decisions, checking current guidance closer to your travel dates is worthwhile if it affects your plans.
Social attitudes
Attitudes are generally more reserved in everyday public life than in, say, much of Western Europe or North America, without being openly hostile — overt public affection of any orientation is less common citywide than in some destinations, more a matter of general local reserve than a specific issue for LGBTQ+ visitors.
Where the scene is visible
A modest but established LGBTQ+ nightlife scene exists, concentrated mainly around Central. Hong Kong has also hosted major international LGBTQ+ sporting and cultural events in recent years, reflecting a generally welcoming stance in the tourism and hospitality sector specifically.
