History timeline

Hong Kong's modern history compresses an unusual amount of change into less than two centuries.

Before 1842

The area was home to fishing and farming communities for centuries before it entered the historical record most visitors learn — Cantonese-speaking villages, some walled against pirates, dot the New Territories to this day.

Colonial Hong Kong (1842–1997)

Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842, Kowloon added in 1860, and the New Territories leased for 99 years in 1898 — the lease whose 1997 expiry ultimately drove the handover negotiations. The colonial period saw Hong Kong grow from a minor trading post into a major financial and manufacturing centre.

The 1997 handover

Sovereignty transferred to China on 1 July 1997 under a "one country, two systems" framework, with Hong Kong continuing as a Special Administrative Region with its own legal, economic and immigration systems.

Hong Kong today

The city remains one of the world's major financial centres, with its own currency, common-law legal system, and a distinct Cantonese-language culture that visitors notice immediately in food, cinema and daily life.
