Organised crime, and specifically triad gangs, form one of Hong Kong cinema's most internationally recognisable genres — but the gap between that genre and everyday reality for a visitor is worth being clear about.

Why the genre is so prominent

Crime and triad dramas became one of Hong Kong film's defining exports alongside the martial arts films covered in our cinema history guide, with titles exploring undercover policing, gang loyalty and moral ambiguity that influenced crime filmmaking well beyond Hong Kong itself.

The reality

As covered in our safety guide, Hong Kong is a consistently low-crime city by international standards. Organised crime exists as a real law-enforcement subject, as it does in most major cities, but it has essentially no bearing on an ordinary visitor's experience — it isn't visible, and isn't something to factor into everyday travel decisions.

Where the genre remains fun to engage with
