Outlying Islands

Beyond the main urban peninsula and island, Hong Kong scatters across more than 200 outlying islands — most uninhabited, a handful reachable by regular ferry and worth a full day each.

Lantau

The largest outlying island, home to the airport, the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, the Ngong Ping cable car, and the fishing village of Tai O built on stilts.

Lamma Island

Car-free, with a well-known coastal walking trail between its two main villages and a string of seafood restaurants on the harbourfront at Sok Kwu Wan.

Cheung Chau

A small, densely packed fishing island famous for its annual Bun Festival, bicycle-only streets and a laid-back beach-town feel a 35-to-55-minute ferry from Central.
