Discovery Bay, up close

Discovery Bay is a large planned residential community on Lantau's north-east coast, distinct enough from the rest of Hong Kong that it's often described as feeling like a different place entirely — low-rise, car-free, and built around a marina and a long stretch of beach.

Car-free by design

Private cars are banned; residents and visitors get around by golf cart, bicycle, or on foot, giving the whole community a noticeably slower, quieter feel than almost anywhere else in urban Hong Kong.

Who lives there

Long popular with expat families specifically for its combination of larger housing, international schools nearby, and suburban-style amenities within a short ferry ride of Central.

The beach and marina

Discovery Bay's beach and waterfront promenade, lined with restaurants and cafés, functions as the community's social centre, particularly at weekends.

Getting there

A dedicated ferry service connects Discovery Bay directly to Central, generally faster and more comfortable than the MTR-plus-bus routes needed for most of the rest of Lantau.
