Sha Tin, up close

Sha Tin sits along the Shing Mun River in the New Territories, one of Hong Kong's earlier large-scale new towns, and today a practical mix of shopping, culture and sport rather than a single obvious sight.

Sha Tin Racecourse

One of only two horse-racing venues in Hong Kong, and considerably larger than Happy Valley on the Island — race days draw large crowds and are a genuine slice of local social life, not just a tourist activity.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

A large museum covering local history, art and culture, with rotating exhibitions alongside permanent galleries on Cantonese opera and New Territories heritage.

The riverside and cycle path

The Shing Mun River's landscaped banks connect into the wider New Territories cycle track network (see our cycling guide), making Sha Tin a natural starting or end point for a half-day ride toward Tai Po and Tai Mei Tuk.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

A hillside monastery reached by several hundred steps lined with individually posed golden Buddha statues, less visited than Wong Tai Sin but a genuinely striking short climb.
