Tseung Kwan O, up close

Tseung Kwan O is among the newest of Hong Kong's large planned new towns, developed substantially from the 1980s onward on reclaimed land in East Kowloon — modern, spacious by Hong Kong standards, and built around a coordinated grid of malls, parks and residential towers.

A planned, modern layout

Unlike the older, more organically grown districts covered elsewhere on this site, Tseung Kwan O was master-planned from the outset, giving it wider streets, more consistent green space and a noticeably different, more orderly feel.

Waterfront and promenade

A landscaped waterfront promenade runs along part of the district's coast, popular for cycling and running, with views out toward the harbour entrance and surrounding hills.

A hub for film and TV production

The area is home to major television and film studio facilities, reflecting Hong Kong's ongoing (if reduced from its 1980s–90s peak, see our cinema history guide) production industry.

Getting there

Well served by its own MTR line extension, making it an easy, if not conventionally touristed, half-day addition for visitors curious about how much of Hong Kong's population actually lives day to day.
