Hostels & budget stays
Hong Kong's budget accommodation scene runs from well-run backpacker hostels to much rougher guesthouses, often in the same building — it pays to check reviews closely rather than book on price alone.
Hostels
A small but solid crop of proper hostels, mostly around Causeway Bay, Jordan and Yau Ma Tei, offer dorms and simple private rooms at genuinely budget prices, usually with a communal kitchen or lounge.
Guesthouses in older buildings
Many of Hong Kong's cheapest rooms sit inside converted apartment blocks — Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansion in Tsim Sha Tsui are the best known examples, holding dozens of independent guesthouses of wildly varying quality behind the same lift.
What to check before booking
- Recent reviews specifically mentioning cleanliness and noise, not just price.
- Whether the room has a window — some budget rooms genuinely don't.
- Actual walking distance to the nearest MTR station, not just the district name.
