The contemporary arts scene

Hong Kong has become one of Asia's major contemporary art hubs over the past two decades, helped by its position as a tax-free art trading centre and, more recently, by major new institutions in West Kowloon.

Art Basel Hong Kong

Held annually, this is one of the region's biggest contemporary art fairs, drawing international galleries and collectors and briefly turning much of the city's gallery and museum scene into a coordinated citywide event.

M+ and West Kowloon

The M+ museum anchors a broader push to establish West Kowloon as a permanent cultural district, alongside the Hong Kong Palace Museum and ongoing performance venues.

The gallery circuit

Hollywood Road and the surrounding Sheung Wan and Central streets hold the highest concentration of commercial galleries, ranging from major international names to small independent spaces, most free to walk into.

Street art

Areas like Sheung Wan and parts of Kowloon have seen a growing amount of street art and mural work in recent years, some officially commissioned, giving a more informal counterpoint to the gallery scene.
