Beaches, swimming & water activities

With over 200 islands and a long, indented coastline, Hong Kong has considerably more beach and water-activity options than its skyscraper reputation suggests.

Gazetted beaches

Around 40 public beaches across the territory are officially gazetted and lifeguard-patrolled during the main swimming season, including well-known spots like Repulse Bay and Shek O on Hong Kong Island, and quieter options across Sai Kung and the outlying islands.

Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking

Sai Kung in particular has a well-developed rental scene for paddleboards and kayaks, taking advantage of its sheltered, island-dotted coastline — a good, low-skill way to see parts of the coast the trails don't reach.

Swimming safety

Stick to lifeguard-patrolled beaches during posted hours where possible; water quality gradings are published and posted at official beaches, and it's worth a quick glance before swimming, particularly after heavy rain.

Wakeboarding, diving and sailing

A smaller but established scene exists for more equipment-heavy water sports, mostly operating out of Sai Kung and parts of the outlying islands, generally requiring advance booking through a local operator rather than walk-up rental.
