Camping & outdoor overnight stays

With around 40% of its land designated country park (see our hiking guide), Hong Kong has a genuine, if under-promoted, camping culture — a way to combine a hike with an overnight stay away from the city entirely.

Designated campsites

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department maintains free, basic designated campsites across several country parks, typically with toilet facilities but no showers or electricity — genuinely rustic rather than a resort-style camping experience.

Popular locations

What to bring

Everything — tent, sleeping gear, food and water — since these are unstaffed, unserviced sites without any on-site rental or supply options. Water sources at some sites need treatment before drinking.

Booking and access

Most designated sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis rather than advance booking, so arriving with a backup plan for a busy weekend is sensible — and checking for any current fire restrictions or access closures before setting out.
