Karaoke, arcades & escape rooms

Hong Kong's dense, vertical city layout has produced a distinctive indoor entertainment culture, much of it tucked into upper floors of commercial buildings rather than obvious street-level shopfronts — genuinely useful to know about on a rainy day or a hot afternoon.

Karaoke (KTV)

A hugely popular social activity, typically booked by the room and the hour rather than performed in front of strangers — groups of friends or colleagues are the norm, built substantially around the Cantopop catalogue covered in our culture guide.

Arcades

A still-thriving arcade culture persists in Hong Kong even as it's faded in many other cities, particularly around Mong Kok and Causeway Bay, spanning classic rhythm and fighting games alongside newer claw-machine and prize-game formats.

Escape rooms

A well-developed escape room scene has grown across the city over the past decade, generally requiring advance booking, particularly for well-reviewed rooms on weekend evenings.

Board game cafés

A smaller but genuine niche, offering a quieter alternative to karaoke or arcades — usually charging by the hour with a library of games to choose from.
