Running & the Hong Kong Marathon

Hong Kong is a genuinely good running city once you know where to go — flat harbourfront promenades for easy runs, and steep country park trails for something more demanding, both often just minutes from a hotel.

Harbourfront and park routes

The promenades on both sides of Victoria Harbour, plus the running track around Victoria Park in Causeway Bay and the flatter stretches of the Bowen Road area above Central, are among the most popular routes for both visitors and locals.

Hill and trail running

The same country park trails covered in our hiking guide attract a dedicated trail-running community, with routes like Dragon's Back doubling as popular running routes for those wanting more elevation.

The Hong Kong Marathon

An annual race, typically held in winter, that draws a large field across full marathon, half marathon and shorter distances — one of the region's bigger running events, with a route that crosses some of the harbour tunnels and bridges not normally open to pedestrians.

Practical notes

Humidity is the main challenge for visiting runners even outside peak summer — adjusting pace expectations and running earlier in the day are both worth doing if you're not acclimatised.
