Budget guide
Hong Kong has a reputation for being expensive, which is true of accommodation and true of imported goods — but transport and food can be very affordable if you eat and travel the way locals do.
Budget traveller
Staying in a hostel dorm, eating at cha chaan teng and noodle shops, and using the MTR and trams keeps daily costs well below what most visitors expect from a major global city.
Mid-range traveller
A private hotel room, a mix of local and Western meals, and the occasional taxi ride puts you in a comfortable middle ground — still meaningfully cheaper than equivalent comfort in London, New York or Tokyo.
Where the money actually goes
- Accommodation is the single biggest lever on total cost — room sizes are small but rates scale steeply with location and view.
- Food can be extremely cheap (a noodle shop meal) or extremely expensive (Michelin-starred Cantonese) with little in between signalled by appearance alone.
- Transport is genuinely cheap by global standards thanks to the Octopus-card network.
